I remember reading “Are You There, God? It’s me, Margaret” at a perfectly appropriate age (10 or 11), and indeed got told it was a “girls’ book.”

as someone who didn't come out until my late twenties after literally hitting the edge of what I could survive, this is painfully relatable. I am so grateful that I have a partner that allowed me the safety to deconstruct so much trauma and be myself, to support me in the face of being perceived by an often very mean world. I am alive and thriving because I made this leap of faith in coming out and starting medical transition, and it hurts so much to see others trapped where I've been.

Took a whole pandemic to get me to accept myself. The relationship Owen had with The Pink Opaque was very similar to my relationship with The Powerpuff Girls in the early 00s. Literally had constant bullying and harassment happened during a period of time because "thats not a show for boys" and was a heavy contributor to repressing many things at that age.

For the record, amongst my family of campers the answer is always bear. It doesn't matter if you ask my uncle, aunt, or cousin; it doesn't matter is the alternative is a lone man or a lone woman. We know, out in the wilderness the greatest danger is an lone unidentified human.

Sexual dimorphism - humans have male and female organs: eggs and sperm. Just because a person can have both, it is unusual. To my knowledge they are not hermaphrodites and can therefore not really a third sex. Just like being born without a limb, does not create another type of human species. So there are 2 sexes, male and female. There are 2 sexual organs, male and female. Shapiro, is focused on the human sexuality, he isn't talking about plant and animals.

I meam its not a big deal if 1 of them were trans but litterally all 3 of her sons are "trans" and she was dressing them up as girls since they were babies. Definitely not normal

I love the polite back and forth, and trying to understand each other. Im old enough to have lived through the aids epidemic and actual oppression of us, and i feel like i havent changed, my party has, and this current backlash from people like Arielle is a natural product of that. I think the election will be a good barometer of where we are truly at, but we are in for a bumpy ride either way.

The ending of the movie so perfectly captures what it’s like to be in the closet later in life, feeling like you are always dying and feeling like you need to apologize constantly to everyone for your existence. It’s hard not to be overly bleak about the ending, though Isabelle’s* seeing the glow still alive inside her does show that there IS still time, it’s never too late. She doesn’t have to live this tortured existence. I left feeling very melancholy, though I also left hoping for the best for her going forward. *Okay, Owen, but I’m calling her Isabelle since that is clearly where her heart is

One of my earliest memories is when my family went to see the Toy Story Disney On Ice and I asked for a Bo Peep doll and was told by my dad that I couldn’t have one because “Bo Peep is for girls.” So yeah, I felt the “Isn’t that show for girls?” line deep in my bones 😖💜

I'm a transgender man who is very obviously queer. My boyfriend is also very obviously queer looking, I want to be able to be in love without the fear of harassment from locals. The dysphoria of being seen as a butch couple, the trauma triggering catcalling that people think is okay cus we're trans. Homophia is still very alive and real; and with every video, people like her release, the likelihood of being accepted grows more narrow.

I just want to say I find it hilarious how comedic that dude was and Samantha did an amazing job holding in tears of laughter. the fact that he was so confident with what he was saying as if it were facts is just sad. if there were men who said they were trans to go into women's bathrooms then I think they would've done it regardless the excuse. I will admit I used to agree with the sports until I found out I was trans myself, did a TINY bit of research and immediately realized I was a moron. granted I never cared about sports, I mean I'm (sadly) a biological dude and while I am kinda strong, there are a LOT of women who could beat my ass into the ground while getting a pedicure so I kind of just kept my mouth shut about it and had my own opinion until I got more information which caused my opinion to change and I think that's a good thing. one of my friends told me to be more up front with my gender and stuff with my family to which I said I was worried about the kids in my house since they don't really gotta worry about it since they're children and he just replied with "so it's fine for kids to learn about heterosexuality but when it comes to you being trans it's too far?" and I had never really thought about it like that and I agree with him about how if we're gonna show hetero cis couples to kids then let's throw in some gays and trans! (last part of my rant, I promise) I also just love the fact that this very obviously gay man, boy, child, whatever you wanna call him, is dissing trans people as if 20 years ago being gay wasn't illegal (I'm in Australia so it became legal in 1994 I believe) and even when it was people would do anything to deny them service just cause they could. I only just found out about you Samantha and already an amazing video, keep it up!

I think it's better that Owen's identity has been left unconfirmed. I very much related to Owen as a gay man. I was always being told by my parents to not do things they found to be for girls or wear certain colors or clothes. I feel the story of the main characters applies to queer community as a whole as we have 2 versions of ourselves - one created to meet the expectations and norms of the society and the true one which takes a lot of work and courage to discover and live proudly with. I think it was suggested that Maddy's character is trans, though. After coming back for Owen (supermarket scene) Maddy's appearance is more masculine and they keep repeating Maddy is not their real name anymore.

at 7:11 there was a political add for a kid named Liam whom, during pride month at his school, did some crazy ass transphobic shit and is facing legal action.The add was trying to get you to donate to help him win the legal case. on a video of a trans woman talking about trans coding in a movie. I'm obsessed with this movie, just watched it 2 days in a row 😂 I am absolutely devastated that I will never be able to watch the pink opaque bc it's not a real show 😅.Also the nods to twin peaks filled my heart with joy. I didn't even really pick up on the commentary about trans-ness but now that you mention it, yeah that tracks

It definitely seemed to me to feel far less optimistic than your point of view. For one, the "There is still time" happened before the flashforward, so Owen ignores it. The very end has Own self-harming to see the TV glowing before leaving and apologizing then cutting to an abrupt ending. I also thought it was kind of weird that the Pink Opaque went from being something with a genuine horror villain to something that was more cheesy and a joke since that was supposed to be the "real" world with Owen's true self. I know they were mixing metaphors because they were also trying to say something about our nostalgia towards pop culture and media, but it felt like it would have made more sense if Owen watched it again and saw that the Pink Opaque had more to give than just being a kid's horror show. Instead, it gave the impression to me that the real word was just as fake as the world Owen was in. Which, to be honest, is great for a horror movie but a bit awkward as an allegory overall.

You asked for if we received boys don't do that comments, too often in my childhood, looking back 45 years this happened over all sorts of things, baking, sewing, crochet, hair and beauty so I never even asked about ballet or dance. It didn't change my core essence, I was diagnosed with gender disphoria and started cross sex hrt almost 34 years ago. It enabled me to become more me. Conversely some years later when I announced I want to learn how to ride a bike and get a Harley, I was told 'but girls don't ride motorcycles'. You only have one life, so live it. Hugs to all in this somewhat difficult Pride month for Trans youth in the UK.

this was the scariest movie i have ever seen, even though i have came out, i haven't done any deeper thinking or accepting myself like i had thought. so this movie still hurt me a lot. the end hurt so bad. i was so mad immediately after i watched it. i was called out, there was no hiding now. didn't help i couldn't even talk about the movie with anyone, it probably wouldn't have even mattered because i feel like no one would get it. it hurts me that no one can understand what i go through. now i feel the pressure, i dont want my story to end like this. this movie was a real wake up call, i have already wasted so much time.

Transvestites are not transgender or transsexual. They are very CIS men, usually very straight too. Who enjoy dressing up in womens clothing , sometimes especially the lingerie. For fun or sexual enjoyment or at least some exhibitionist excitement. This is not a criticism against transvestities, they are valid too. But it is a very different identity to being trans. Transvestites do not identify as women. I do also think that bobs burgers was mixed up about what they were representing, that they were conflating transfemmes and cis men who like to dress up. The little mention of penis removal surgery highlights that. Transvestites would not have any interest in surgery.

Matt talking about how children can't make decisions is so triggering for me. My grandmother is a narcissist, both me and my mother suffered with her. She was exactly like this. "You're just a child, you don't know what you want or who you are, I do, because I'm the one raising you." My mother's dream was to be an IT specialist and she got to do it only after we cut out all of our ties with my grandmother, she was chosing my future career too, when I was just six years old. I literally lost my voice as a child because of her and it took me way too long even in my adult years to find it back. I struggle to make decisions even now, because I was never allowed to. I was always cut of by her when I was about to make one. And there literally was a restaurant incident like Matt was giving as an example. My mother wanted to take me to a restaurant for my 7th birthday and picked an italian one, because I love pasta and she knew that. My grandmother decided on a local "pizza" pub instead (it's in quotes, because it was the name, their pizza was know to be the worst food around our town). They had spagheti with mushrooms on the menu and I was begging my mother to have them. My grandmother cut me of, right in front of the server, telling me I don't actually want them, because she knows I would like to have the fried cheese and ordered it for me. I hate fried cheese, but it was the cheapest item on the menu, which I strongly believe was the reason my grandmother ordered it from me. And my mother as well. She got herself the pasta I wanted and didn't even let me try it. My mother snapped at her for ruining my birthday and it all came into a huge argument that lead to us being kicked out of the restaurant. I cried myself to sleep on my 7th birthday. Because my grandmother didn't let me to make decisions.

He looks like a guy I would do a dine and dash with, the minute he opens his mouth, I be excusing myself to go to the ladies room and duck out.

As a later-life transitioner, this hit home really hard. In part because I was right about that age at the time this film was portrayed, and because it mirrored a lot of what I felt my entire life. As a kid having a fantasy you always wanted then being told you can have it but you need to do something drastic (in Owen's case, running away from home). For some kids they do it but for Owen and myself the logical part of it brain wins out and we stuff those thoughts away because they're "just a fantasy". Then he gets older having ignored that side of himself for years and it comes up again. This time it's more real, there's more context, it's more plausibly true. Unfortunately to achieve it requires more drastic steps. It requires you to kill your existing life (for Owen this is a quite literal thing) and still have faith without direct evidence that it'll work out in the end. So despite wanting it so bad again the logical mind wins out you push it away bury the feelings and push on with life. True acceptance didn't come until much much later when living that life your current life wasn't mentally and physically possible anymore. Again the parallels to my life are kinda shocking, and in some ways really sad.

As a man, I would gladly choose the bear over some female who tries to gaslight me into thinking she is some harmless, perfect little angel. It's time for men to realize women are not harmless and take steps into protecting ourselves from them.

I think it can be benefical for the movie to not downright label it as a transgeder experience. I think the not-labeling opens the movie up for a broader audience, which is good in the end because more people get to see how it is to be trans without triggering prejudice as much. Well, people who are opposed to "woke" stuff might downright boycott it or pull up their inner walls and not enjoy it anyway, whether labeled trans or not, because they read "boy likes girl stuff". But those who are neither opposed nor allies they might actually just find a movie about someone who just doesn't belong and actually identify with them. If the main character is labeled trans, for many moderate normative people that could prevent the self-identification.
